Christmas trees are produced as a long-term sustainable crop with a growth cycle that begins in seedling beds or greenhouses for the first 1 to 3 years. In early spring, following a fall harvest, the soil is prepared for planting. Seedlings approximately 12 inches tall are then hand or machine planted in straight rows 5 1/2 feet apart allowing enough space for them to grow. It will take between 5 to 8 more years for a Christmas tree to reach a nice 6 foot height.
